The incense ceremony was performed by court nobles, feudal lords and other wealthy people. Although they rarely had access to them, the commoners were also fascinated by aromatic woods. The word kyara, which refers to aloeswood (agarwood), even became synonymous with “something wonderful”. Hair wax smelling of aloeswood was also very popular.
Slowly savour this deep, rich incense to understand why aloeswood was considered the most luxurious of perfumes by the people of old Edo.
